The U Barracks

The U Barracks, former Franz Joseph Barracks

Current name

The U Barracks

Address

2 Mărăşti Square

Dating

The Vienna Barracks was built in 1752, having a ground and a first floor, with a closed perimeter on all four sides. The Austrian Baroque façade was directed towards Mărăşti Square.

The building was severely damaged after the 1849 siege.

After 1849, a new barracks was built with three levels (a ground floor and two other floors), with U-shaped design opened to the north, towards Mărăşti Square.

Names and historical functions

In 1859 – it was called Franz-Joseph Barracks.

1923 – Artillery Military School.

In the mid-twentieth century it sheltered warehouses.

Architectural style

It was made in the Austrian barracks’ style, massive buildings with a ground floor and two levels, built between 1850 and 1860. It lost most of the façade decorations, which gave its stylistic characteristics.

Other information

As it can be noticed, this barracks was positioned at the city limits. In fact, right before it was the Vienna Gate – hence the name of the first barracks built here. The Vienna Gate provided access to the northwest, on the Szeged - Budapest – Vienna way.

There were another two barracks, also built in front of the city gates: the barracks of the Petrovaradin Gate (access to the south to Belgrade; it was where the theater is today) and the famous (due to its size) Transilvania Barracks, in front of the gate with the same name.
