The Cetate Synagogue
The Cetate Synagogue
Address
6 Mărăşeşeti St.
Dating
1863 – 1865
Arch. Ignatz Schumann from Vienna
Architectural style
The style used is historicist eclectic, typical for the second half of the nineteenth century, using “Moorish architecture” ornaments and symbolic decorations specific to the Jewish faith.
Other information
The building was initially called the New Synagogue. The Old Synagogue (1760 - 1762) is located inside the “Hebrew square” (Judenhof), to not be visible from the public space of the street. At that time it was not allowed to “disturb” the appearance of a Christian city!
