THE FLOODGATE OF THE FORTRESS

Timisoara’s Fortress used to have four floodgates, with the role to flood and drain the water in the moats between the walls of the fortress.

The floodgate from Piata 700 was discovered in 2014, at the construction works in the area. It was built in the 18th century, of bricks on a massive oak substructure, it was 7m wide, 40m long, while the spillway body walls were about 1,50m high.

The floodgate had, at first, a defensive role linked to the emptying of the fortress’ moat after lifting the siege, but at mid XIX century it was also adapted for the discharge of wastewater from the gutter, placed in the middle of the moat.
