St. Maria Monument

monumentul sf. maria-2 small

Situated in St. Maria’s Square, it was inaugurated in 1906.
The sculptor was György Kiss.
The architect was László Syékely.

The monument denotes a chaste visual expression, in the 1900s style, szeceszió eclectic with Neo-Romanic and Gothic elements.

A legend says that the monument was erected on the spot where Gheorghe Doja (Dózsa), leader of the peasant war defeated in Timişoara, was executed in 1514. Doja, “King of the peasants”, was put on an iron throne and crowned with a crown, both red hot. His flesh, pulled with red hot pliers, presumably was given to his captains to eat. To the Jesuit monks who were singing religious hymns, the gentle image of the Virgin Mary appeared. The legend has a tiny fault: the Jesuit Order was founded only in 1533-1540. In 1514, there were no Jesuit monks!

Another legend says that the execution took place near the castle, and the leaders of the nobility, Zápolya and Báthory, watched the sinister spectacle from one of the castle’s windows. Therefore the execution could not have taken place at the site of today’s square, which is located too far from the castle.
