The Iron Bridge

podul de fier small

The Iron Bridge or „The Metallic Bridge” ( as it is known today) is in the iosefin District, between Ady Endre St. and Andrei Mureşanu St.

This bridge was built in 1871 instead of the current Traian bridge, between the Cetate and Iosefin-Elisabetin districts. It was disassembled in 1915 and reassembled in 1916, on the current establishment.

Due to the numerous water branches until, Timişoara was also a „bridge city”. Until the 70's of the 19th century, all the Timisoara's bridges were made of wood. Only after that date, the most important bridges have been rebuilt based on metallic structures.

71 bridges were already built in Timisoara, before the initiation of the the Bega river regulation works, in the Fabric district, between 1907 – 1910: five bridges had metallic structures provided with wooden bridge floors, nine bridges were provided with brick pillars covered by wood, 28 bridges were made of wood and another 31 smaller walkways were built of wood, over the secondary channels.

Nowadays, Timisoara is enhanced by 11 bridges built on reinforced concrete or metallic structures and three walkways.

The „Iron Bridge” represents a typical example for the Timisoara's bridges from 1870 – 1910.

A legend tells us that this bridge had been designed by the well known engineer, Mr. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. He allegedly would have inexactly calculated the bridge's height, and this is the reason why the vehicles cannot be driven here.

Actually, the bridge, which was also used by vehicles for a period covering 44 years on the older placement, has been deliberately assembled as a pedestrian's bridge, on overhead bases, in order to allow the ships to pass below.
