The former Splendid Hotel
The former Splendid Hotel or the Gemeinhardt Palace was designed and belonged to the famed architect Martin Gemeinhardt.
It is situated also on General Dragalina Bd., and one side along the Bega River. It was built in 1911, with additions in 1912.
The building’s appearance meets the most advanced stage of the 1900s style. The simplified decor elements already announced the “international modern style” architecture after the First World War. The building’s corner is set out by a small roof tower. On the second floor loggias, the architect uses the visual “motif” “Serliana” (from the Italian Renaissance architect Serlio). The central part of the loggia is covered with an arch supported by two columns. Laterally, on both sides of the opening covered by an arch, are two smaller openings, each covered with a straight beam. This motif, often used by architect Palladio during the late Renaissance, was reused by the “postmodern” architects from the 1980s.
