Roses Park

trandafiri1-smThe Roses Park is placed in the middle of the city, next to the Bega Canal. It’s one of the many parks Timisoara is famous for, hence Timisoara’s nickname: the city of flowers.

Wilhem Mühle si Wenceslas Franz Niemitz, two famous landscape architects and ornamental plants breeders were creating a large garden called The Royal Roses Garden from Timisoara.

Timisoara’s roses were exported in the whole Europe, mainly to Vienna and Budapest.

Built in English and French style, the garden was reaching 9 ha and it was inaugurated on 19 July 1891 for the Universal Exposition for Industry and Agriculture in Timisoara.

Franz Joseph himself visited the garden on 16 September 1891. Emperor Franz Josef was impressed by his hybrid rose collection,
trandafiri6-smMühle received the Order of Merit “Golden Cross” with crown and the one of officer, he was recognized as a supplier for the imperial and royal court. Wilhem Mühle created the 1st rose cultivar in Romania, named Madam Josephine Mühle. He cultivated approximately 2000 different species, forms, sizes and colors of roses. At the end of the third decade in the 20 th century, a large variety of roses could be found in the private gardens of the florists in Banat. This is the reason why Timisora is called “city of parks and roses”.

During the I World War the park was completely destroyed and it was restored in 1928 by the Colonel Sambateanu family and Arpad Mühle, the son of Wilhem Mühle.

Arpad Mühle, born in 1870 in Timisoara continued his family tradition and promoted Timisoara around the world. He initiated the reconstruction of the Roses Park, after it had been destroyed during the 1st World War. As a specialist rose breeder he created 15 new rose varieties that are registered in the world’s greatest rosaries. As supplier of the Royal House of Romania he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Romania with the rank of officer, and the Industrial and Commercial merit.

The new park was  inaugurated in 1934  and it was reaching 25000 sqm and it was the biggest rosary in south east Europe with 1200 roses species, some of them rare and new worldwide. Most of the roses were brought by the contribution of  the rich women in town.

This garden does not only house a great variety of flowers, decorative art pieces and pergolas, but it also has a huge stage and hundreds of fixed seats.

Main cultural events of Timisoara, as The Festival of Hearts, Outdoor Cinema Festival, Opera and Operetta Festival etc. are taking place here every summer.
