The Archiduke's House

arhiduce-smallIt is situated on 11A and 11B 3 August 1919 Bd., it was built after 1868 and  before 1873.

On the other side of Micloşi Square, on the boulevard’s corner, is the “Archduke’s House”. Building was only been permitted in this area after 1868, when the width of the “Esplanade”, the land around the castle on which building was not allowed, was reduced from 948 to 569 m, from the Cetate District fortifications’ limit to the outer neighborhoods. Only then was building permitted on the land on the east side of the square and up to nowadays Traian Square.

The building is built in the eclectic style, similar to the Second Empire movement, specific to the middle of the second half of the nineteenth century.

This was the first two-storey house in Fabric. From its original owner, Karl Kunz, the building was purchased in 1873 by Archduke Johann Salvator of Austria-Tuscany, a nobleman from the royal family of Habsburg-Lorraine. Because of his nonconformist spirit, the Archduke, an artillery colonel, was disciplinary relocated from Vienna to Timişoara. After several years, the rebel Archduke, nicknamed “Gianni”, gave up all his titles, took the bourgeois name of Johann Orth, married a dancer, got his shipmaster license and disappeared without a trace in a trip around the world in 1890.
