The Catholic Church in Iosefin

biserica cat iosefin-small

The Iosefin Parochial Catholic Church St. Maria is on Regele Carol I Bd., on the corner of General Dragalina Bd.

The construction  started in 1774, completed in 1775, it was damaged during the siege of 1849, than restored. The tower spire was built in 1889, the church restored in 1985 and 2008.

The church started to be built a year after the district, who was then inhabited by Germans, received the name Iosefin. It presents the characteristic features of the late Baroque with some rococo details. The building dominated the surrounding structures as long as Iosefin had a rural aspect. The house has a short façade with a fronton by the street and a long façade on one side of the plot in the yard, as in the plain villages of Banat. After Iosefin began to rapidly grow following Timişoara’s connection to the Central European railway system, the baroque tower of the church started to seem too short. Thus, in 1889, the sharp spire of the tower was built, which still exists today, and that gives the building an unusual svelte-like appearance for Baroque compositions. For a long time, the clock in the church tower was the only public clock in Iosefin, at a time when ordinary people could not afford to buy a watch.
